DAY 2 | PUBLIC SPACES | PRIVATE BODIES

What is private in a public space? How do we keep it private? You’re walking down the street and someone snaps a picture of you. You’re having a private moment in the park and someone takes a video of you. You’re waiting at the bus stop and someone grabs you.

Violation of our right to privacy makes public spaces unsafe. It takes away our capacity to make decisions about how we want to occupy a space, and who we want to share it with. When women's bodies are seen as "public property", it allows others to disregard our right to self-determination.

Day 6 | Don't forward violence | Campaign spotlight: Take Back the Tech! Colombia

Ending violence against women and girls is everyone's responsibility.  In the first of five videos shared from Take Back the Tech! campaigners in Colombia, the role that men and boys can play to stop the violence is clear.  It addresses the recurring problem of privacy violations which are emerging in mapping of tech-related violence everywhere.  Women entrust and share intimate photos with partners who then violate that trust by disseminating the images broadly, a violation which is further compounded by third-party sharing.

Day 11 | Sexual assault, rape & human rights | Map it. End it. Demand change.

Rape and sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes in the world mainly due to shame, stigma and trauma Victims are often blamed for somehow "provoking" the violence, subjected to intense interrogation, and repeated violation of their rights. We are all responsible for defining the spaces we occupy - both online, offline and political.

Rape and sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes in the world. According to the UN, estimates of reported cases range from only 3% out of all rape cases in South Africa, to 16% of all rape cases in United States. This means that out of 100 women who are raped, up to 97 of them are keeping silent about the violation.

Day 11 | Stories of resistance | Share yours!

Chances are, most of us have encountered some kind of harassment, whether online or offline. Each encounter is different, depending on who the harasser is, where you are when it happened, the context of the harassment etc. When caught in the moment, we might sometimes find it hard to respond, especially if the situation has never been encountered before. But when we are armed with the knowledge of experience, reflection and discussion, we are better able to know what to say and do to define the context, draw the line, and communicate clearly that the action, comment or gesture is not acceptable. How have you turned the situation around? What was your strategy to transform a threatening and unsafe space into one where you felt safe and in control?
